US Navy Medic Liner Rayon Webbing Named Served In Normandy

I just got this helmet and it was local pick up only so it was no easy feat getting it shipped and I don’t have it yet.

The seller states that the helmet belonged to a medic who served in Normandy and received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

I was able to get a better picture of the name on the leather sweat band and it looks like Abraham Cohen.

I will post better pictures when it arrives but I have these for now.

Please review the name picture because I’m not sure I’m right and was this man in Normandy?

Either way it’s a nice rayon high pressured transitional liner. There could potentially be a connection to Normandy but until some research is done on the veteran we have no definitive answer. Did you perhaps pick this up on an app like Letgo, or Facebook Marketplace?

Does it look like Abraham Cohen?

According to the seller the helmet has paranormal qualities.

I will tell the story of how I chanced into this later but I will say that after all that was involved it cost $195.00

Amazing really because I had to pay for someone to get it and ship it.

Zooming in on the photo it looks like that is exactly what it says. It definitely says Abraham. The last name looks like Cohen as well. Very unfortunate the cracking in the leather has made the name hard to see, however it is still just visible to make out the name. I would say it’s Abraham Cohen. Nice liner can’t wait to see what you find on his service!

Also could you explain why the seller thought it had paranormal “activity”?

CWG,

I’m thinking that once I have this helmet in hand the name will show up better.

It almost looks like the name was cut into the leather

or did it just crack that way?

The seller is impossible to get ahold of, the paranormal stuff came to me second hand.

Also this is mine, it’s been hand Camo’d and has the exact same round white medic markings.

I picked this up on eBay some months ago and never got round to posting it.

looks very similar in colour

Thanks Mike, that sure looks like him but it says Army.

I don’t recall seeing anything Navy with the last four numbers on it.

Thats more of an Army thing to use the last four.

So if this is an Army helmet why does it look like a Navy Corpsman?

I agree it looks like he first wrote his name then traced-cut his name in the headband. Or it could simply be how the leather has naturally cracked over the years. It also looks like he did that on the right side as well. Once you get it in person you will be able to tell. Did the seller say anything about a shell or was it just the liner that they had?

Put it under a UV light that should hopefully make it easier to see. You could also try night vision on a camera. Interesting helmet for sure hopefully something interests comes from it!

So if this is an Army helmet why does it look like a Navy Corpsman?

Because Navy Corpsmen were not the only personnel to have this marking.  In the PTO, it is well documented that the Army used the same painted white ball to designate their medical personnel. This has been corroborated on a number of examples in collections.  Often, the Army helmets/liners had the rank on front with the White Ball on the rear.  The same size white ball, around 2 inches, has also been documented in photos from the ETO, although I have never seen one or had one in hand specifically identified from Normandy or Op Dragoon.

So, you have a rare opportunity to send for his records (when the archives open) to examine his service and establish the theater of operation. Otherwise, there really is no proof it was at Normandy, if it was.

Certainly, a wonderful liner you picked up, we just need the rest of the story...

The liner arrived today.

That was the first time I ever did a deal like this and glad I stepped out of my comfort zone.

The chinstrap is stiff, most of the hardware rusty but everything is there and it has a great look.

There is no doubt about the name it’s Abraham Cohen.

Here are some pictures I took.

Looks amazing, great score! It would appear Mr. Cohen traced-cut his name in the headband after he wrote it. He wanted to make sure his name would always be able to be findable. Very cool can’t wait to hear about his service!

As always I would suggest possibly asking Matt Nation, the MAN on finding information about veterans. However that’s if he is willing to do so which he is most of the time, a very kind member of the forum he is!
