US Military Crate. Curious as to what it would have contained

Recommended Posts

I recently attended a barn sale and made a couple of acquisitions. This crate is one of the items I bought, and I was curious as to what it might have contained or been used for. Judging by the construction I believe it is from WWI or WWII but I found it curious that it seems designed to be carried by four people and my google-fu is failing me. Any information or even theories would be much appreciated!

Is it marked US anywhere? Dimensions? Based on the table length it may be a crate for weapons issue, that would have new issue weapons wrapped in it. Possible an ammo crate for rocket type rounds?
I’ve an old light set kit crate but this doesn’t match it in construct or dimension so I lean toward something weapon or system connected that requires a 2-4 man lift

Yeah looks like a pioneer type tool chest. Different sets came in different sized chests. I don't recognize that one offhand, but the piece in the lid reminds me of retainers found in some crates for hand saws.
