USS Pleiades named Hawley liner group

Recommended Posts

Just picked this up recently, a nice named USS Pleiades grouping consisting of named Hawley liner, painted ship souvenir and some photos....the USS Pleiades was a armed cargo vessel that made numerous voyages across the Atlantic with cargo, war supplies and troops she saw service from 1941-45 in many places that are hand painted on the souvenir piece of canvas that might be a wall hanger, table display or small rug?....very well done piece of art probably done over seas somewhere....the liner is named twice to Lt Ferree...have not researched him yet, the portrait photo post card im assuming is him and looks to be signed from Jim...the other photos show a ceremony of some kind with some high ranking USNavy and USMC officers...very interesting little grouping that i will probably be moving along soon as i dont collect Navy and dont have the room to display it but will enjoy it for now......mike

The number and arrangement of the triangles on the painted canvas makes me think it might be a backgammon board.

Agreed, i think you pegged it, nothing like a little backgammon when off duty.

Great group, and a named hawley to boot. well done brother.

Always looking for uniquely marked helmets, WWI and WWII American Field Service items, WWII and earlier USMC items and named or numbered medals and medal groups.

Very cool, the art is probably not meant to go on the wall because the fringe on top would hang down over it

A picture is worth a thousand words, so here's a thousand pictures!

Very nice and a very unique group. I believe aef1917 is right and the number of triangles, 24, is correct. Making a portable cloth board that's personalized like many other items and unit flags or pennants makes it even more interesting. Aren't there photos of ships with checker / chess boards, and backgammon boards built into the tops showing how popular that game was at the time?

It’s an “Acey Ducey” board. Sort of like Backgammon, but different. Extremely popular Sailors game back then. Still played today, but not with the same “Enthusiasm”. To me, (an old Sailor, and sin of an old Sailor, who grew up with this game), that’s the best piece in the collection!
