bldrhouse Posted July 26, 2020 Share #1 Posted July 26, 2020 I've just acquired a USMC General's dress white cover (visor cap). Unfortunately, the cover itself is a bit dirty and stained. Two questions: 1. How do I remove the cover from the lower part (that goes around the head)? I see the two bits that attach the chinstrap to the headband, but not sure how to open from inside the sweatband w/o damaging. 2. Cleaning? Will regular (special non-toxic) dry cleaning do it? See attached.
Kadet Posted July 26, 2020 Share #2 Posted July 26, 2020 Honestly, I would leave it just the way it is...
Bob Hudson Posted July 26, 2020 Share #3 Posted July 26, 2020 I have come across many old yellowed and/or stained white covers and I think the only thing that might restore them - or destroy them - is bleach, and it never seemed worth the risk. Kurt Barickman Posted July 26, 2020 Share #4 Posted July 26, 2020 I echo Andy's suggestion; I would leave it alone. Kurt
bldrhouse Posted July 26, 2020 Author Share #5 Posted July 26, 2020 thank you all Since I have two, might try one with very diluted non-chlorine bleach; let soak for ten minutes first. will also ask my local art conservator/restoration specialist and post here. z
cwnorma Posted August 2, 2020 Share #6 Posted August 2, 2020 There is a product commonly used in the antique industry on yellowed lace doilies and linens called "Restoration Fabric Restorer." The product is advertised as containing no chlorine. https://englesideproducts.com/product/restoration-fabric-restorer/ I have seen the results of this product on lace, handkerchiefs, table covers, etc. I have never used it so I cannot endorse the product but it may be something you want to research. bldrhouse Posted August 2, 2020 Author Share #7 Posted August 2, 2020 thank you so much! just hate to see this beautiful cover less than white. Wouldn't want the ghost of Chesty Puller to haunt me. z
bldrhouse Posted August 2, 2020 Author Share #8 Posted August 2, 2020 Does anyone know what material the quatrefoil embroidery on top of my USMC white cover is? The above product warns against using on satin. z

bldrhouse Posted August 3, 2020 Author Share #10 Posted August 3, 2020 After WWII exploits I give him a lot of slack. Spit and polish vs combat skills? No contest.
