Cataloguing your collection

I would like to begin the process of cataloguing my collection, mainly so that as the years go by I can preserve all the knowledge I’ve acquired about the different odds and ends (uniforms, medals, and insignia) I’ve accumulated in some kind of orderly fashion. Anyone have any advice or examples to share of how to do this? Thanks for any input
