skypilot6670 Posted July 16, 2020 Share #1 Posted July 16, 2020 Solon Spaulding enlisted on September 7,1861 and was killed on June 29,1862. His disc is an eagle style ,”War of 1861”. It has very little wear as Solon only had it for 9 months at best. I’ll use a newspaper extract from the ,”Burlington Free Press” to describe Pvt. Spauldings death . “ From a letter from one of Co. I , published in the times this Wednesday, . Our Regiment was all cut to pieces , one Company which had ninety-four men had no more than ten left. Solon Spaulding who stood beside me was shot thru the head and instantly killed. “ The Fifth Vermont sustained very heavy loss at the battle of Savage Station , again I will rely on , “ Regimental losses in the Civil War “ , by William Fox to describe it. The Camp scene is early ,at Camp Griffin. Solon is probably in the image ( courtesy the Library of Congress collection).

skypilot6670 Posted July 16, 2020 Author Share #4 Posted July 16, 2020 Scott and Paul thanks for commenting , it is both tragic and sad. I like to think I’am honoring their memory. Sometimes we loose perspective when we here numbers like 620,000 lost their lives , by showing a personal item and a brief description of the individual it helps show the real sacrifice. wartimecollectables.com Posted July 19, 2020 Share #7 Posted July 19, 2020 When one thinks about how 'personal' a disc or now dogtag is, it's pretty overwhelming.
