Mess Dress of Major General Dr. Howard Unger.

 

Among many other things, Chief of the USAF Aerospace Medicine Division and Commander of all USAF medical forces in Europe.

 

After receiving his medical doctorate from George Washington University, Dr. Unger pursued a career as an officer in the US Air Force in 1954.

 

In addition to being a flight surgeon and resident physician at several Air Force Bases, such as Wright Patterson AFB, March AFB, and Randolph AFB, he also

served as chief of research and flight medicine at the Directorate of Professional Services at the US Surgeon General’s office.

 

Later, General Unger left for the Republic of Vietnam in September 1968 to serve as the chief of Professional Services and Operations Division and Military Assistance Command.

 

After leaving Vietnam In September 1969, he returned to Washington, D.C. as chief of flight medicine in the Office of the Surgeon General and become chief of the Aerospace Medicine Division.

 

Next, he would serve as commander of the U.S. Air Force hospital at Royal Air Force Station Lakenheath, England, in July 1972, later being assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Ramstein Air Base in Germany as command surgeon and was in charge of all U.S. Air Force medical activities in Europe.

 

By the end of his career, Unger became commander of the Aerospace Medical Division, Air Force Systems Command, Brooks Air Force Base, Texas, where he would unfortunately suffer a stroke, which resulted in his premature retirement from the USAF in the early 1980’s.

 

Unger would pass away in 2012 in San Antonio Texas.

 

His awards include:

The Legion of Merit, the Air Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Distinguished Service Order, the Vietnam Air Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
