militaria360 Posted July 7, 2020 Share #1 Posted July 7, 2020 I finally got around to looking through my canteens, not withstanding duplicates this is what I've got, Are any of of these a rare? canteen cups: R.M. co. 1945 aluminum K.M. co 1945 stainless S.M. Co 1945 stainless A.G.M co 1944 aluminum A.G.M co 1945 aluminum Canteens: volrath 1944 ss AGM co 1944 al GP&F co 1944 ss Gp&f co 1944 al Mirro 1956 al LF&C co 1918 aluminum canteen 1918-B.A.Co. aluminum canteen Canteen carriers: (Inside flap) muer bros mfg co 6-18 ?shale 1942 ?Jeff UMD 1945 st croix G 1945 ?= my best guess. I have one pouch with a Steel hook instead of brass. And one that has USM stamped on the front, I thought it was for USMC but there doesn’t seem to ever have been a C at the end of it any idea what it’s for? Also while on the subject of canteens; Besides markings, and color. How can you tell if a canteen carrier is WWI or WWII? I noticed on my 1918 dated cover the lift the dot posts are concave at the base, whereas on my WWII dated ones the posts are convex. I don’t know if all WWI carriers are like that? cgutierrez Posted July 7, 2020 Share #2 Posted July 7, 2020 Through my limited experience in collecting a few canteens I don't believe any of the above would rate rare. 1945 and 1944 dated cups and canteens are still quite abundant. Some, like your R.M. Co. 1845, would be a bit more uncommon. Of course, condition counts for alot. Your USM canteen cover looks more like someone's attempt at a USMC rather than any official stamping. I am finding that cups, conteens, and even covers date 1942 and 1943 are increasingly becoming harder to find in good to excellent condition. Also 1941 dated canteen covers (excluding Baker-Lockwood) with clear date and maker marked are also becoming rare. An example would be a recent ACME LEA GOODS 1941 dated in near mint condition that went for over $300 on ebay recently. Again, all that I have said is what I personally observe in my canteen collecting experience, so take what you will from it. Best CG
