I have seen and owned US Felt and Cork Helmets 1870's thru early 1900s with US Eagle Front Plates also saw Cartons of New York State and Bannermann put togethers but those had variations of a ribbon in Eagle's beak.  Also numbers on shield, crossed muskets etc etc.  I need help with this one I found today.  Richard

I kept looking and found a couple like mine that had been offered on eBay as being 1880 period and the auction said scarce as Eagle looking to its right.  Sellers claimed real period and Bannerman did not have dies so not reproduced.  Does anyone feel this is most likely correct?  By the way one showed that threaded attachments go where mine has the 2 small holes.  Richard

I know we have experts about alot on here but maybe none have looked at this yet.  But is this a copy? If so why?  Help he decide if I want to keep this.  Thanks in advance  Richard 😷

It's not a Federal Plate. If an old strike, probably used by militia who didn't have their own design to wear (cheaper to go with this generic style rather than design and produce a custom plate) If a more recent strike, could have been used by a band.

Whether or not it's a restrike doesn't have a significant effect on value. Little if any demand by collectors, so not much value.

Hello Kurt I had misgivings about it but not sure.  I found two completed sales of this one $55.00 and one $81.00 and I think + postage.  They were described as 1881 variant and original.  I felt uneasy about it and maybe it is State Militia as I would think if for a Military School or Marching Band I would have found more than 2 in over a year period of eBay and some Private Dealers Web Sites.  I respect your opinion so I'll just list on ePay as I try not to list anything questionable on the Forum FS section.  Richard

Often times items like this are "over marketed" on Ebay with impressive descriptions (e.g., "Custer", "7th Cavalry", "Indian Wars", etc) that might make an inexperienced collector take the bait and pay too much.

Kurt got me thinking and I did some more looking.  I believe that the majority (large majority) of this design were and still are for Marching Bands even at the High School level.  Richard
