M1840 Medical Officer’s sword originally obtained in 1972 from the family by collector Lewis Leigh and documented. Surgeon Stephen M. Cobb, 35th Iowa Infantry wore this Medical Staff sword by Horstmann, Philadelphia while he served in the campaign in Vicksburg and surrounding areas in 1863. Stephen Cobb was born in Maine and enlisted at age 43 from Muscatine, Iowa on 9/16/1862 as Assistant Surgeon in the 35th Iowa Infantry. He was promoted to Surgeon 8/15/1863 anf mustered out on 8/10/1865 at Davenport, Iowa. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
