Can you ID this WWI mystery Rank?

Recommended Posts

Aloha Everyone,

I received this photograph from a friend who was looking for some info on the leggings worn by this soldier.

As you can see, he's wearing M1910 leggings, US collar brass on his standing collar, a campaign hat (looks newly purchased) and three apparently gold service chevrons on his left sleeve.

But what I cannot make out is the round rank insignia on his right sleeve.  I've perused the usual sources trying to match it up including Sarge Booker's lenghty topic, 1902 - 1920 Army of the United States chevrons, but have yet to identify it.

Time for the Great War Wizards to get involved.....

What type of specialist rank is he wearing?

Is it possible for you to zoom in on that patch so we can see it better? Thanks!

I don't think that is a rank... I think it is a specialty  mark.

I looked through Emerson's Chevron book and I could not find anything that looks similar to that shape. It could be Gas Service?? Catalog # 294 in Emerson's book but this is just a guess and we are no closer to finding out what it is with just a guess..

To cite Emerson: "...Although the war Department di not authorize this chevron, it was commonly worn by Gas Service PFCs in France and issued by the AEF Quartermaster".

Sorry I couldn't help more.. I will continue to search and ask around
