Salvage Sailor Posted June 14, 2020 Share #1 Posted June 14, 2020 Aloha Everyone, I received this photograph from a friend who was looking for some info on the leggings worn by this soldier. As you can see, he's wearing M1910 leggings, US collar brass on his standing collar, a campaign hat (looks newly purchased) and three apparently gold service chevrons on his left sleeve. But what I cannot make out is the round rank insignia on his right sleeve. I've perused the usual sources trying to match it up including Sarge Booker's lenghty topic, 1902 - 1920 Army of the United States chevrons, but have yet to identify it. Time for the Great War Wizards to get involved..... What type of specialist rank is he wearing?
Rakkasan187 Posted June 14, 2020 Share #2 Posted June 14, 2020 I don't have my Emerson Chevron book available here at the house, it's in my office but when I go to work in the morning I will see if I can try to ID it.. Best regards.. Hope you are doing well Leigh
Tolzer Posted June 14, 2020 Share #3 Posted June 14, 2020 Is it possible for you to zoom in on that patch so we can see it better? Thanks!
Salvage Sailor Posted June 14, 2020 Author Share #4 Posted June 14, 2020 That's about as good as this gets without distoring the image
gwb123 Posted June 15, 2020 Share #5 Posted June 15, 2020 I don't think that is a rank... I think it is a specialty mark.
Rakkasan187 Posted June 16, 2020 Share #6 Posted June 16, 2020 I looked through Emerson's Chevron book and I could not find anything that looks similar to that shape. It could be Gas Service?? Catalog # 294 in Emerson's book but this is just a guess and we are no closer to finding out what it is with just a guess.. To cite Emerson: "...Although the war Department di not authorize this chevron, it was commonly worn by Gas Service PFCs in France and issued by the AEF Quartermaster". Sorry I couldn't help more.. I will continue to search and ask around Leigh

AustinO Posted May 12, 2021 Share #9 Posted May 12, 2021 Could be one of the CAC specialists patches as well. A clearer closeup might help, but limited by scanning capability/DPI probably.
kfields Posted May 12, 2021 Share #10 Posted May 12, 2021 I also looked through Dion Williams early work titled "Army and Navy Uniforms and Insignia" but nothing jumped out at me. The fellows hat cord is very light and might be a clue to his branch. Perhaps Finance or Quartermaster? Kim
vette59 Posted May 13, 2021 Share #11 Posted May 13, 2021 Maybe for an observation balloon unit?
