Mango Posted June 7, 2020 Share #1 Posted June 7, 2020 This shovel cover was included in a lot of US items I recently bought. It is hard to read the text but I believe the DSA says 1-47-59-65-E. One of the rivets looks to be missing but was actually just pulled through. I managed to get it back in place but after I took the picture
917601 Posted June 9, 2020 Share #2 Posted June 9, 2020 Nice carrying case. I recently found a local surplus store that had 1965-69 dated E tools in a big " junk" box, Coneta/ Imperial bayonets and canvas cases like yours.I picked out a few, one for my Vietnam mannequin ( all 1968 dated) and put together a 68 dated cover , 70's bayonet and WW2 shovel for camping use. The canvas covers were $5, the 60's dated shovels were alittle high( I thought) at $60. I did get a discount for cash.

917601 Posted June 19, 2020 Share #5 Posted June 19, 2020 There is more to the story, my son and I dug a USGI two man foxhole entirely with the 1944 E tool a few years back.Took us about 40 hours, the fighting hole still is intact in the back acreage. I had to keep his nose in the dirt and learned a lot about the life of an Infantryman.
917601 Posted June 19, 2020 Share #6 Posted June 19, 2020 Wow, memories, I just took a walk back to see the hole, it has been actually about 5-6 years now. Much better camouflage , pines taken over, alittle overgrown, no dead animal bodies in it , still about 5 feet deep and very usable. The cross on the left is where we buried our dog.....time flies.
