Looks like another fantasy piece. No luck w/ motto, charges...colors and enameling are not quite right,  CB and scratchy, "dusty" back are classic characteristics of fantasy.  Note how the die imprints on the back where the Indian head is. Found another fantasy piece w/ similar, although not all, charges.

It looks like a theater made piece, especially with those pins on the back. But the quality does look pretty poor.

Most of these fantasy pieces were made in Taiwan. If it’s CB, definitely. Some of the early fantasy pieces, i.e., 551st PIB, with a screw post, were made in Austria.

How did you get 973rd Coast artillery?

Thanks for showing your source.

The Mottoes is a great identification source - by motto. Many Class Z types (sub class E F FR FRE) have been pubbed in the Mottoes catalog to aid in identification, not verification of period manufacture. You reminded me to get another catalog since my original copy is MIA. Alas, despite having about a million entries in The Trading Post, we have not pubbed an image of the 973rd CAC. However, with the unit being disbanded in 1940, the piece that began this thread is hardly of similar period originality or manufacture. Trust me, US Army DIs were not being made in Taiwan (then called Formosa) at any time until ca. 1970s-80s.
