3 war Lt. Col. Roland A Campbell short snorter

This short snorter , a 1 Peso Japanese note from the occupied Philippines,  has the signature of "Roland A Campbell, Lt Col A C" (near bottom of note) and several others.


Roland A Campbell (1917-2003) (ASN: 0-53172), retired as a Major General after serving in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.


He commanded a B-24 bomber squadron in the Pacific Theater during World War II. As commander, 4th Reconnaissance Squadron he completed 32 combat missions with a total of 194 flying hours in B-24 aircraft. He participated in air operations against Borneo, Luzon, New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan.


During the Korean War, General Campbell assumed command of the 344th Bombardment Squadron in January 1950, and when the Korean War began, he led the 344th Squadron to Japan. He completed 50 combat missions with a total of 444 flying hours in B-29 aircraft based out of Japan.


 He served as Wing Commander of three different SAC wings consisting of B-36 ' s, B-52 ' s and KC-135 ' s. He also served as Deputy Director of Staff of SAC and Director of Material of SAC during his career. His final combat missions were flown in Vietnam while he was Chief of Staff of Pacific Air Forces based at Hickam AFB in Hawaii.


He was a rated command pilot with more than 7000 flying hours. Included among his military decorations and awards were the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, and Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster,  the Distinguished Flying Cross with Five Oak Leaf Clusters, and  the Bronze Star Medal.
