KASTAUFFER Posted May 5, 2020 Share #2 Posted May 5, 2020 is CSA stamped on it? I would have thought the entire inscription would have been in hand if it were completed all at the same time. Its also a bit unusual that all the reeding is gone from the edge, even with wear some should be present. Kurt
skypilot6670 Posted May 5, 2020 Share #3 Posted May 5, 2020 Hey Mike. This is a known fantasy piece , there are 4 or 5 similar ones named to different Confederates. There was a small booklet published on these half dollar pieces 20 or so years ago.A google search “ Civil War Pender Disc “ will bring up several good articles on them. manayunkman Posted May 5, 2020 Share #5 Posted May 5, 2020 If you drop this coin it will not have the ring of silver. The coin is molded and not struck. That is why the edge looks carved. They we’re hiding the mold seam. The coin itself is a counterfeit.
USCapturephotos Posted May 6, 2020 Share #6 Posted May 6, 2020 Yup. Like everybody else said, these started turning up around 25 years ago. Paul
mds308 Posted June 4, 2020 Share #7 Posted June 4, 2020 Back when I subscribed to North South Civil War Trader they ran a story about these around the early 1990s. The coins are cast and not real. About a month later a friend called me and was so excited because he found a confederate ID disk. When I asked him if the guys name was Dorsey Pender you could hear the wind leaving his sails. He paid around 150 dollars for the faux piece.
