I recently picked up these two 113th Cavalry Regiment DUIs from two different sellers. The one on the left I know is WWII and I believe that the other one is too. The seller had it listed as unknown as far when it was manufactured but since the 113th was inactivated in October 1945. I know that they were reactivated in 1992 but I would imagine that the new DI would be clutch back. My one question is that the one on the right does not appear to have the patina that the other one has, it almost appears that sometime in the past that it was polished.

The one on the Right, with what looks like a 10 as a hallmark will in fact be a 1 with the capital letter O, and will be the 1954-1965 hallmark code for Orber Manufacturing Company of Rhode Island.

From one source It appears that despite the official lineage, the unit was reactivated in like 1957-58 under the Combat Arms Regimental System or CARS as the 113th Armor, the 1st Battalion 113th Armor, and the 2nd Squadron 113th Armor and assigned to the 34th Infantry Division, the 1st Battalion as the division's Tank unit, the 2nd Squadron as it's Recon unit, and would be inactivated along with the whole division in 1963. The WIKI on the 34th Infantry Division gives the 133rd Armor as in the 34th Infantry Division, but I think that's an error as I can not find any unit crest or anything on a 133rd Armor. The 1954-65 Code would jive for this time period of 1957-58-1963.

Here is a better image of the back and it clearly looks like a 0 and not the letter O

Not saying that you’re wrong as I am sure you have been collecting a lot longer than I have and I came here for opinions.

The official lineage from U.S. Army Center of Military History does not say anything about it being reactivated until 1992. In the book “The Man On The Red Horse” published 1975 does not say anything out it be reactivated at all!

Thanks for your info,

Not so much collecting but being a student of Orders of Battle and Unit Lineges, which in the cases of the latter sometimes takes a lot of back and forths to sort out the many conflicting and confusion details and such. It is curious if indeed the unit was briefly reactivated as the 113th Armor and it isn't mentioned.

As to Hallmark code, here are two examples of 1950s ORBER DIs, the 1O, one a Pin Back for the 20th Antiaircraft Battalion, and a Clutch Back for the 217th Antiaircraft Battalion.  We're starting to see O-1 Codes however on several DIs for 50s units, not 100% Sure, but these O-1 ORBERS may be collector copies from the mid -late 60s as these units were inactivated under CARS in 57-59. The 1O codes though will be from 1954 to 65.

Thanks for your impute but to some degree the pin is still somewhat of a mystery. I understand what you are saying and it is curious if the unit was briefly reactivated as the 113th Armor and there is no mention of it. As I read in an earlier post it would be nice if there was a “DUI Hallmark Reference Book” but the link to WAF was very helpful.

I recently joined ASMIC and as a member I have access to there quarterly magazines back issues and I found the answer as to why this DUI was reissued. In 1959 they did create 113th Armor just don't know how long it was activated.

Also it seems that in 1957 it was activated as the 113th AA BN.
