They Also Flew

With a lot of "Shelter In Place" time on my hands thought I might post photos of some of the auxiliary flying service uniforms that I have in my collection.

From left to right: Civil Air Patrol custom Ike, CNAC cap and tunic and a Civilian Airlines Contract Division ATC cap and uniform. Only the ATC set is Id'd,

Very nice selection.

In Kansas City there is a TWA museum of sorts. They used to occupy a small space at the Expo Mart where the ASMIC conventions were held. They later moved to a permanent space complete with vintage airliners. The lighting was horrible, but I will see if I can dig out my photos of the ATC and war years items they had on hand. My original thread on here seems to have dropped off.

That looks very interesting.

Any history behind the uniforms?

Can you take more detailed pictures?

It’s not everyday you see these.

Hi Gil,

Thanks for your reply. And coincidentally to your post about the TWA Museum, this pilot flew for TWA! He was First Officer Denzel M. Roberts. In a following post I will show his uniform in more detail but thought you might like to see some of the other items that came with the grouping. This includes an Id sized photo a letter of commendation from TWA and a small silver TWA lapel pin. I thought it interesting to note in the letter that despite his name being Denzel, he went by the name "Bob". And also wonder who the "High Ranking Officials" were on his "Ever Sharp Mission".

Thanks for your reply. I will show each uniform in three more posts here in this thread. If there are any more or different photos you'd like to see just let me know.

Thanks again,

Paul

The CNAC set. This jacket is made of extremely fine material and is likely a tailored jacket, custom made in India. The cap badge is rather a crudely theater made one. I have owned over the years several CNAC caps and this is the first I've seen with this type of metal badge.
