Photograph of a U.S. Marine writing home after combat on Namur Island, in the Kwajalein Atoll. The marine sits beside the graves of his fallen comrades with a pencil and paper atop a bag, which rests on his outstretched legs. (NMOTP description)

U.S. Marines, Cpl. Harold "Pie" Keller (right), shakes hands with Sgt. Howard Snyder (left), as they stand on the rim of Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima between the first and second flag raisings on February 23, 1945.

Keller, would later be identified in 2019, as one of the men in Joe Rosenthal's famous photo of the second flag raising on top of Mt. Suribachi. Snyder would be killed in action later during the battle.

It looks like Sgt. Snyder has his name wrote on the right side of his helmet cover.

Young are correct as he has his entire name stenciled on his camo cover.  Notice the improvised holster of a ditty bag for his 45 he acquired from Dick Wheeler.

The former Carlson Raider of small stature was called a warrior by 1st Lt. John K. Wells.  Pie Keller’s story is just

Six men of the 549th Night Fighter Squadron look from a slit in the side of their tent. The Japanese cut the tent and tossed in grenades till the men organized and started fighting back.

CPL Edward Romatowski with the M2 Browning .50 MG on his Sherman in Krefeld, Germany - Early March 1945

Serving with C Company,701st Tank Battalion, 102nd Infantry Division, twice Romatowski had tanks shot out from under him, joined up with nearby soldiers and fought with them before catching up with his unit. He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his WW2 service.

Edward L Romatowski was born on June 24, 1924 in New York State. On November 18, 1945 he married the love of his life, Catherine J Curran and they had a son and daughter.

Edward passed away at the age of 79 on December 26, 2003, Catherine passed away at the age of 87 on February 24, 2017. They are buried together at Saint Michaels Catholic Cemetery in Findlay, Ohio.
