An intriguing one, subject is in British Battledress, in British Web Gear, is armed with a British Bren Gun but is wearing a U.S. Steel Helmet, a Belgian Soldier in late 1944????

The background doesn't really fit but couldn't this picture be from Korean war? There is a reference pic on Wikipedia of a Luxembourgish soldier (they served with the Belgian contingent) with a similar combination - but I am far out of my comfort zone here

Yes at first I thought maybe a Belgian in Korea, but the buildings in the background say Europe.

The leg pocket on the trousers and cut of the jacket. Also both soldiers in the post #279 far right have Brit wool battle jackets. The one on the end can be seen with the trousers and leg pocket.

By Jove You're Right, like most we,ve seen this photo forever in various books, and this is thee first time we've been aware of that, never ever noticed that before.

The following picture would definitely make you scratch your head without any additional information. 

Turns out the US-British cooperation in North Africa landed M-1 helmets in the British army, but probably only for a very brief period. Still an amazing fact you'd never believe without seeing for yourself. But there you go...  British soldiers wearing M-1 helmets!
