I have another 1940 four pocket with plastic buttons. It looks like they were removed on this one and other buttons added.

The bottom button is what I have seen on jackets. All other buttons on this jacket are like the second from bottom. They are rimless and smooth faced. Why?

I have an 8th AF gunner's uniform with similar smooth rimless buttons. Removing one reveals they are British made (in Birmingham).

These are marked Superior Quality.
