I've been looking on here, but so far can't find an answer. The WWII Women's Army Corps Medal - what was it awarded for and did Army Nurses get it?

The Army Nurse Corps was a separate unit from the Women's Army Corps. Therefore they would not receive the WAC medal.

Also, the Medal was awarded to any woman who served in the WAAC between July 10, 1942 and August 31, 1943 or served in the WAC between September 1, 1943 and September 2, 1945.

So, this is like a campaign medal, then? I've never had one until now, so never relaly done much researching or reading on women in the WWII services other than nurses and WAAFs!

Women have served since the American Revolution. I have read books about women in all branches of service and in all conflicts. Women are still facing obstacles today that women have faced throughout history. You should start reading more about women in the military. It is an interesting and amazing history.

The Rooster

This is a very interesting topic and the first Woman that comes to mind is "Molly Pitcher" Mary Hays

When I lived in NJ I visited the battlefield at Monmouth and theres a spot marked where Mollys Cannon stood.

This is the spring where Mary Hays got the water. On the Battlefield.

This article is more a general history of Womens service in the US Armed forces from the begining..

And lets not forget the Women who moved west as pioneers.

My Great Grandparents lived in a Sod house in Iowa in the 1870's.

Im betting my Great Grandmother knew how to handle a rifle.

Women can and do now serve alongside Men in Combat roles

proudly. They've always been there.

My across the street neighbors years ago were 2 sisters - both served in the WAAC's - One went to the ETO and the other married one of the Army's last Enlisted Pilots while stationed at Drake Field in Tampa. I have the medals from both of them - They were great friends and they hosted our wedding in 1984.

They are both gone now but both received the WAC medal

A few months ago I read the book "Lost in Shangri-La" by Mitchell Zuckoff about one of the more famous WAC's, Cpl. Margaret Hastings and her survival of a plane crash in the jungles of New Guinea in spring 1945. It was a great read. I'm sure there are other books out there that focus just on Cpl. Hastings if your looking to learn more.
