USN Award Ceremony? Retirement Piped Ashore

Recommended Posts

I came across this photo in a grouping to a retired submariner and wondered if anybody could tell me what actually is going on. I think it is an award ceremony, it looks like the full size medal is the Navy Achievement Medal. Now, knowing he was a “Gold” crew member of the USS Von Steuben, it is possible the award was made while this crew was on land, while the boat was at sea with the “Blue” crew. I have information that he served on the following subs: USS Requin (SS-481), USS Carp (SS-338), USS James Madison (SSBN 627) USS Daniel Webster (SSBN 626) USS Von Steuben (SSBN 632).
A related thread I started is here: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/339474-sub-in-dry-dock/&do=findComment&comment=2727891
I’m Army Infantry, what do I know about USN traditions-very little!
Thanks for looking and for any information.

He's being "piped ashore" to mark the end of his career.

Why then is the gangplank in the middle of a parking lot or whatever it is??

Their boat (Submarine) is at sea with the Blue crew aboard and the Gold crew is either on stand down or training up for the next rotation.

As we often said during the Cold War years, haze grey and underway

and

Sailors belong on ships and ships belong at sea

Thanks Savage,

I got thinking about the last scene in The Gallant Hours right, Halsey in Mufti with his flag in his arms leaving the ship off a staircase on the side of the ship, piping and salutes etc and being rowed ashore by a crew made up entirely of Ensigns. It was a moving scene.

Nice photo.

I really like the beards, it was a sad day (01 JAN 1985) when the Navy officially did away with the beards.

I remember coming to work and seeing all the clean face ugly guys (I was one of them) that I suddenly had to work with!!!
