Is there a Korean War 27th Inf Raider Patch?

Recommended Posts

Sorry no patch just the question. In 1951 Lt. David Hackworth formed a Raider unit at the request of his 27th Inf Regt CO. This was done. The "Raider" Det was around for only about 3 mo I think. Hack moved on.

Just curious.

Thanks

Don't know about a specific patch, but In one of his photos in his book he's wearing a 25th Inf Div Combat patch, with a Tab, which I do believe says RAIDER, I'll check again, have to dig book out, if so I'll have to scan it

Ah yes, then there was this patch, a well known one as it is depicted in some Army Patch books from the 70s. don't know more on it really, and curiously, it is not discussed here on USMF, I couldn't even find a Forum photo of this patch, found them online. This one was sold awhile back off Ebay, and was described as " Korean War No Glow US Army 25th Infantry Division Raiders Patch"

There is an upcoming article in The Trading Post which will answer this question. The patch depicted in #3 is a reproduction.

I have never seen this photo and would love to see it/know what book it is in. Dave has the final article on the 27th Raiders. If I remember correctly it will be in the July September 2020 Asmic Trading Post. I spent the last year and a half on the article. I traced as many former members as I could, but it seems all have passed on. Its pretty definitive on the insignia worn by the unit. In short there is at least one patch (definitively), but possibly four. Best ABN

And here it is, February 1971, while in the 44th Special Tactical Zone. I haven't looked at this book in like 9 years, so when I dug it out, it seems he's wearing a RANGER Tab over it rather than a RAIDER Tab, normally in this period Hackworth wears the 101 as a Combat Patch, and in full color, but on this particular ARVN Cammie shirt he chose to wear the first unit he seen action with, the 25th Inf Div, he wears the RANGER Tab cause he was initially and briefly in the 8th Ranger Company an 8th Army unit, but why then over the 25th Inf Div patch then? Ach who knows LOL There was indeed a controversy over it in the 90s, see HERE Jump to Ranger Tab.

Hack was in the 25th In Korea of course so entirely correct if he chose that unit as a former combat assignment.

Yes that is a ranger tab. Its covered in the coming ASMIC piece as well. Very interesting story to that. In short, all 27th Raiders are allowed to wear the RANGER tab, but are not considered Rangers and cannot be called RANGERS. None of the regular RAIDERS ever went to RANGER school, but are allowed to wear the tab. Its a really weird situation this unit got into...sorta like a battlefield commission, but with a ranger tab. Thanks for the picture. ABN

Yes, he also makes mention of wearing the 40th Inf Div as a combat patch now and again, the 40th Inf Div as we know was his second wartime unit in Korea, don't know if he wore at one time or another the 9th Inf Div.

Here's one more, looks like a RANGER Tab over what will be the MACV patch, guess it was worn by him because of the 27th Raiders.
