from a uss hornet prop pilot: is this the granddaddy of the current similar 2000s model? no maker mark or I dunno where to find it (chest zip stuck, but attached tag is '66-dated). it came with a probably-unrelated pressurized green hood with valve and cloth ties in the back. come in dustin! thanks a lot.

phantomfixer

Just FYI,, the tag form is dated 66, and still in use today, until supplies exhausted...the NSN reflects a post early 70s NSN...so would expect the suit to be 70s-80s issue...

other s that know way more about survival items should be able to pin down the type and era

cool suit!

There should be a label on the inside rear I believe. Try to peak through the neck seal. Id say its 1986 or later, the Green Tag looks like it was filled out in 1996. Even though that tag points out the flaw, its Repairable hence the green tag. Those waterproof zippers a real pain in the rump to operate so it might not be stuck.

thanks mohawk - will do! this belonged to an ASW officer flying prop planes off the bennington and hornet, Ret. '85. I figure it's worth maybe $100, sound right?

A surplus store near me has a few brand new ones for 90 and they haven't sold in a few years Ive seen them there. They can be found new even from 25 bucks to 60 bucks and dont seem to sell. Used ones seem to sit even more. For a display though, a used one would be good seeing the booties are installed. The booties were fitted and installed as were the wrist seals. The neck seal was also trimmed to fit the user. There are a few different models of these suits but this one is a CWU-74/P

Guess there isn't much nostalgia with them from guys who wore them as they hated them, and if someone actually wants to have a suit to use they would rather buy a new Mustang suit. Beside the sewing error listed, how is the condition of the neck and wrist seals? Those usually start to deteriorate after a short amount of time. Other parts that went to these were a pair of inflatable mittens and a inflatable hood.
