Kansas Raider Posted March 1, 2020 Share #1 Posted March 1, 2020 Saw this Western Bowie today. An ingenious way to keep the knife from falling out. What time period is the knife?

sundance Posted March 1, 2020 Share #3 Posted March 1, 2020 It looks like a Western W 49 bowie with a custom sheath. No idea on the date but if you Google Western W 49 knife it gives you an idea of the date based on the markings.
zzyzzogeton Posted March 1, 2020 Share #4 Posted March 1, 2020 That one is from late1965 or early 1966 to early/mid 1967. That securing mechanism also appear on a Blackie Collins design variation of Western's W46-8, circa 1990.
sactroop Posted March 1, 2020 Share #5 Posted March 1, 2020 I think the snap if a modification by and end user. I've seen them employed on a variety of fixed blade knives over the years. This is the first W49 I've seen with one. From what I can see of the sheath, it looks like the one Western was first supplying with what I call the second series W49.
