Salvage Sailor

Those are most likely his retirement shoulder boards.

Also, you may not be looking at the Vietnam era CO. That PI belt buckle could have been made in the late 1970's through the 1980's which would widen the possibilities. (note the sea service ribbon which is a post Vietnam award).

Many of the Commanders on that list would have been subsequently promoted to Captain (four stripe) or even RADM's prior to their retirements. For example, the CO of my DDG was a CDR and four tour Vietnam vet. He was promoted to CAPT later in the Cold War era (1979) and then he served as the NATO Supreme Allied Commander-Atlantic. In addition he also served Commander for the U.S. Atlantic Fleet, Commander for the U.S. Seventh Fleet, and Deputy Chief of Naval Operations. His last duty in the Navy was to serve as Commander-in-Chief, of the U.S. Atlantic Command and retired as a VADM.

Your CO would have been a CDR aboard the ROBISON and then retired as a Captain. Therefore you have to take the eligible CDR candidates in your time period and see who made CAPT. This would be listed in the USN Officers Register and other publications which detail dates of rank, etc.

Nice Command at Sea pin by the way. Good Hunting.

What Salvage is saying is correct. DD/ DDG Captains were almost always CDRs. Usually junior at that. And, the Sea Service ribbon is from the mid/late 70s.

1. Click this link http://www.navsource.org/archives/05/01012.htm

2. Scroll to the bottom of the page where the COs are listed

3. If the name is blue and underlined, click it for a photo

4. Match up ribbon racks
