Recommended Posts

Garland McCarson was born on June 21st, 1893 in Hector, Arkansas to Mr. and Mrs. William McCarson. Garland would begin his career as a carpenter, eventually moving with his parents to Iago, Texas. Soon, headlines of war would hit the nation and Garland would be called up to serve his nation in the 143rd Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division under the command of Major General Edwin Greble. Corporal McCarson would depart for France from Newport News, Virginia aboard the SS Dante Alighieri. Soon, Corporal McCarson would enter the French Reserves on September 26th and entering combat at the Meuse-Argonne on October 3rd. The unit fought bitterly against the German defenders, but the men finally took the north bank of the Aisne River. Corporal McCarson was lucky to survive the fighting unharmed as a rifleman in the regiment.

After the war, Garland would continue his carpentry career and would marry his lifelong wife Lois. He would pass at the age of 69 on March 9th, 1963. He is now interred in Belew Cemetery in Aubrey, Texas.

Finally, my favorite photo. This is a portion of a postcard Garland sent home. Half of it is missing but this was wonderful to find with the rest of the grouping.
