Chris Posted February 8, 2020 Share #1 Posted February 8, 2020 Just thought you folks might enjoy seeing this one. I have never encountered this patch before. It's awesome! I found this today at an estate sale. 6.5" wide, 7.5" top to bottom. I found a couple WWII Navy pins at the estate as well including a V-5 Program son-in-service pin. So, I am guessing maybe the owner served in WWII and stayed in for, at least, the Korean War. I thought this looked Korean War era, and maybe Japanese made, but would appreciate being corrected if I am wrong. This is not my focus area.To the best of my knowledge VS-23 was created in 1950 as an anti-submarine squadron.
Salvage Sailor Posted February 8, 2020 Share #2 Posted February 8, 2020 Aye, Korean era, Japanese made. A unique specialty patch indeed. As a USN radarman myself, I dig it!
Chris Posted February 8, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted February 8, 2020 Thanks. I appreciate the conformation! Do you think the patch was for rardar personnel on the ship supporting the aircraft, or for actual radar operator flight crew? I don't even know what we had available on aircraft in Korea. TBMflyer Posted February 8, 2020 Share #4 Posted February 8, 2020 Chris, great patch. If I were to guess, I think it would be for an airborne ASW radarman. The squadron was flying Grumman AF's off the USS Bairoko during the Korean War. Mark
