I'm guessing this was a GI bring back from Turkey. The pipe is beautifully carved in relief. I have seen numerous EGA pipes but never one with an eagle this large. The carver (Salim) signed his work. Superb detail.

Now that is pretty neat. What do you think this dates to?

I am eagerly collecting Pre-WWII USMC material. Any Marine Corps Span Am era, WWI, Banana Wars, or China Marine related material is especially sought after.

What is it made of?

The pipe is made from Meerschaum. I believe Meerschaum is fossilized sea foam. Very prevalent in Turkey.

The pipe is probably less than 10 years old. I did find Salim pipes available on line. Affordable but not cheap.

I saw this one earlier today. Since these are handmade, usually, no two are identical. Close. My eagle is bigger and I think my bowl may be bigger than the one in your image. Thank you.

"I have only two men out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (Message sent by 1st Lt. Clifton B. Cates. USMC, 96th Co., Soissons, 19 July 1918 - later 19th Commandant of the Marine Corps 1948-1952)
