viking73 Posted January 25, 2020 Share #1 Posted January 25, 2020 Hi, This is another recent pick up from an antique store. I don't usually collect this type of stuff, but it was cool and the price was too good to pass up. From what I know, this is a leather .38 caliber cartridge case. It's got a nice 1909 Rock Island Arsenal stamp on the back. Seems to be in pretty good shape for being around 111 years old! It was covered in verdigris when I bought it. I removed it with vinegar and toothpicks and it looks much better (should have taken a "before" photo). The neat thing I thought were the stamps inside. I'm guessing this was issued to a Colorado based Field Artillery unit. I googled the 74th Field Artillery but I didn't see anything tying it to Colorado... Any ideas? Also, how rare is something like this? Here's a shot of the front side:

Brian Keith Posted January 27, 2020 Share #5 Posted January 27, 2020 Nice find! the 74 may just be the number assigned to that particular item to account for it. Thanks for showing it. BKW
AustinO Posted January 28, 2020 Share #6 Posted January 28, 2020 I'd say 74 is a roster number, there was probably a number before Fld Art (7th?) I don't know how many FA Regiments Colorado had at the time. These are somewhat common, but yours is in nice shape and unit marked. I'd be asking $40-45 for it at a show here. milsurp_scout_14 Posted February 10, 2020 Share #7 Posted February 10, 2020 Here's one I picked up yesterday. Made by Rock Island and dated 1904, with heavily stamped markings. Any ideas on which unit it may have belonged to?
