PanzerPaul Posted January 23, 2020 Share #1 Posted January 23, 2020 Hello, About a year ago, I got interested in U.S. WWI Tank Corps items. I thought I would post my very small collection. Items are: 2nd pattern private first class patch. Inter war 68th Field Artillery Regiment Mechanized. 2nd pattern enlisted man’s collar brass. 1st pattern officers collar brass. 2nd pattern Master Senior Engineer – uniform removed. AEF Armored Corps patch, Company B, 344th Tank Corps – uniformed removed. This example matches one on display on a uniform at the National World War 1 Museum in Kansas City (see additional photos). In talking with an employee at the museum, he felt that AEF tank corps patches with the white, lower right segment were made to denote Company B tankers, 344th before any standardization set in. Tank Corps Liberty Loan patch. As a “newbie” to WWI Tank Corps and Inter war years, I would be happy to hear from more advance collectors. Thanks, Paul

Mr.Jerry Posted January 23, 2020 Share #3 Posted January 23, 2020 Nice stuff Paul- Great War armored stuff is really tough- a friend of mine just got a great ID'ed armored officer group, with a piped overseas hat (I never even knew they had the tricolor piping) and the matching officer collar insignia. I was lucky enough to get a painted helmet and small group from a guys g-grandfather that I am trying to research him.

tredhed2 Posted January 23, 2020 Share #6 Posted January 23, 2020 Here is a tank battion patch I have not been able to positively ID and believe I have it oriented incorrectly (should be flat w/ the yellow like a heraldric bend) and an officer's cap for Mr. Jerry. The bottom piping is supposed to be blue.
PanzerPaul Posted January 26, 2020 Author Share #7 Posted January 26, 2020 Thank you for posting the great items. Mr. Jerry your helmet is incredible, with early tri color armored triangle! It is amazing. Let us know what find with your research on the tanker. Any pictures or further info on the officers group your friend turned up? Tredhed2 great looking uniform and overseas cap. I did not know there were tricolor piped tank corps overseas caps. Super black cat coy have patch and pin! Any other early U.S. Armor items anyone would like to post? world war I nerd Posted January 27, 2020 Share #8 Posted January 27, 2020 I'm not 100% sure if the designation for these five AEF Tank Corps insignia are all correct, but it's what I have them labeled as in my files. 301st Tank Battalion ... yellow & red swallow tail pennant 302nd Tank Brigade ... white & red swallow tail pennant 304th Tank Battalion ... diamond divided vertically into blue yellow & red sections (see next post) 307th Tank Brigade ... square divided into yellow, blue, yellow & red quadrants 330th Tank Battalion ... green square superimposed with a black tomcat (not sure if this design is an actual or a fantasy insignia) Feel free to correct any of the above if the color or designation is incorrect. PanzerPaul Posted February 3, 2020 Author Share #23 Posted February 3, 2020 Hello, World War I Nerd: Thanks very much for posting the 301st - 330th brigade/battalion patches. Great information. Super period tanker photos too! robinb: Great items - plaster cost plaque from the early tank base at Gettysburg, the helmet, trunk, and splinter googles are wonderful items. Are there any good reference books that cover WWI Tank Corps items? The only one I have run across is: Patches and Insignia of the US Army from the Great War to the Early Cold War - Armor , Cavalry , Tank Destroyer , Constabulary by Kurt H. Keller It has a decent section on Tank Corps, but certainly doesn't cover all the patches, insignia, etc. Anyone else out there with WWI tank items they can post? Thanks, Paul
PanzerPaul Posted October 9, 2021 Author Share #24 Posted October 9, 2021 Hello, I am hoping someone has information on what I believe is an early Distinct Unit Pin on this WWI U.S. Tank Corps Captain's uniform. It has a crown at the top, elephant, three gazelles, a mountain range, and some other animal at the bottom. Note that the background colors are primarily those of U.S. armor patches. Anyone ever run across one of these? The uniform has the patch for a U.S. Tank Corp member trained by the British / a U.S. crew that used a British Mark tank.
