Navy WO-1

As many of you already know, the USN has brought back the WO-1 rank, with its "pinstripe" rank insignia, narrow chinstrap and crossed anchor cap badge. The intent is to help retain cyber warfare specialists. The first group was promoted last November.

It's pretty cool that they brought back the traditional rank insignia. I did not expect that and was pleasantly surprised.

Wow! The first and last WO1 I saw in my career was my division officer at NAVSECGRU Dept of NAVCOMMSTA Philippines in 1971. He had been a CTR1 when promoted to warrant officer.

For Justin B: Would you mind if I copy your warrant timeline graphic? It would be for my records only, not for redistribution.

Probably too hard to come up with something new! The WO-1 insignia have stayed on the books since 1991, though, when they were brought back for the technical nurse program that ended in '99.

Of course not! I guess the forum limits images to 1000 pixels width, which makes it a little small to read. I will send you a larger version.

Excellent move by the USN, Well Done..

Not sure how the seniority of officers is designated in the USN, but in the US Code concerning the Coast Guard, the CG shall have the following officers. Admirals, Vice Admirals, Rear Admirals, upper and lower half, Captains, Commanders, Lieutenant Commanders, Lieutenants, Lieutenants junior grade, Ensigns, Chief Warrant officers, Cadets, Warrant Officers, and enlisted personnel. Note that Warrant officers are the lowest officer grade..

Since 1908 the CG WO has worn the 1/4 " cap lace, since the 1920s the CG Cadet has worn the 3/8 " lace chin strap, and the CWO has worn the 1/2 " lace chinstrap.

The width of the chin strap lace was an indicator of seniority.

For Dan Also, Would you mind also sending me a copy of your excel for the Warrant ranks? I have been working on one similar for rating badges and group rates. I would love for you to take a look at it and give me your opinion on how it looks to you. Thanks for the heads up on the WO1 too!

Hi Dennie,

Here are links for images of that chart in two sizes. I'll PM you on the rest so as not to take the thread off topic.

It looks like there will be another USN W-1 specialty: Aerial Vehicle Operator for the new Stingray carrier refueling drones. Also new for the Navy is that they will be recruited to directly enter the service at W-1, more like Army aviators but of course on a much smaller scale.

Accessions won't begin till 2022, so they have some time to come up with a new corps device!

A photo from July 28 seems to show a new corps device worn by a WO1 aerial vehicle operator. Zoomed in, it looks to me like a winged horse, but I can't find anything on official navy sites.

I'm not sure, either, if they are using the USMC UAV wings or something else.

Interesting photo Justin and that may be an AVO.  Of note, it's also a CWO2 insignia, not WO1

The article linked identifies the officer as WO1 Thomas Forsythe, Aerial Vehicle Operator, designator 7371. The stripe looks like more like a quarter-inch than a half-inch CWO2 to me.

Do any Mobil stations still use the winged horse sign? That's what it reminded me of!

Haven’t seen a Mobile station in decades.

Aye, but they're all Pegasus from Greek Mythology

Great choice for this new AVO WO designator insignia

No, but a USN oiler did use Pegasus while she was in service

I remember oilers always flying an oil company flag for unreps. Most had a variety, not just one brand. As an SM, I always appreciated it. It was cool.

So, I wonder if the enlisted operators will get this as a rating mark?  Are there enlisted operations?  What is the source rating for this?I grew up in a Navy where the old 5inch 38 “Jam and Slam” with ring and bead sights was still considered first line AA defense
