Navy to name aircraft carrier for Pearl Harbor hero Dorie Miller

if my memory serves me correctly, and at this stage that may be a stretch, Miller was credited with downing 3-4 Japanese aircraft. A white sailor downed one at Pearl and was awarded the MOH and spent WW 2 CONUS on Bond drives.

 

This is long overdue.

I noticed on the news a picture of him wearing a USS Indianapolis named cap...I did not know he served on that ill fated ship as well.....Bodes

One article quotes him in a contemporary interview saying he fired the gun for what he thought was 15 minutes and might have hit one plane. But, recollections in that kind of situation can be sometimes be difficult even soon after.

This would be the first time an aircraft carrier will be named after an enlisted sailor. Usually they are named for famous battles, admirals or politicians. There was one named for Orville Wright in 1945.
