unit91 Posted January 10, 2020 Share #1 Posted January 10, 2020 I have several nazi coins that have the swastika on them. They are corroded. Should I try to clean them? I'm not a collector, they came from a family member who brought them back from the war.
Thor996 Posted January 10, 2020 Share #2 Posted January 10, 2020 The rule generally speaking with coins is do not clean. Speaking as an erstwhile coin collector. With USA coins if u clean 99 percent of time u destroy the value or greatly reduce. I would assume foreign coins same rule applies. Dave
unit91 Posted January 10, 2020 Author Share #3 Posted January 10, 2020 Thank you. My wife's uncle was in the Tank Destroyer Corps and brought back some coins (nazi, Bavarian, Polish, French, etc.), some paper money, a uniform cap insignia, and a gold mothers medal. Wasn't sure how to deal with the coins. Will research these things and probably hand them down to the grandsons.
lettow Posted January 10, 2020 Share #4 Posted January 10, 2020 The coins are made of zinc. Zinc corrodes easily and it is almost impossible to remedy it. While the general rule with coins is not to clean them, these are very common coins that have little numismatic value anyway.
