stratasfan Posted December 13, 2019 Share #1 Posted December 13, 2019 This is my Grampa (who we never met): In the left picture, he is on the right, and in the right picture, he is on the left. A couple of questions for some Navy pros on here! What are those three stripes on his shoulder? Is that all the stuff he is wearing on these uniforms that tell you anything about his service? Also, I got a copy of his DD214 and it has this listed in the box for "Other Service Training Courses Successfully Completed": NTC FOR SN PF FOR SN QM3 VOL 1 GTC FOR PO'S PF FOR SM3 Any help with any of this is highly appreciated! Thanks! Merry Christmas! Elizabeth
collectsmedals Posted December 13, 2019 Share #2 Posted December 13, 2019 In the pictures where he is wearing the white uniform the two stripes on his sleeve signify he was a Seaman Apprentice, in the picture with the blue uniform he has been promoted to Seaman so he got the third stripe
sigsaye Posted December 14, 2019 Share #3 Posted December 14, 2019 His training courses are: Navy Training Course for Seaman (E-3) Practical Factors for Seaman (skills test) Quartermaster Course ( you read the book then answer questions at the end of each chapter) General Training Course for Petty Officers Practical Factors for Signalman. In the Navy, Quartermasters are Navigators. In the photo of him in his blues, he is in front of a Chief Quartermaster. Quartermasters and Signalmen (visual communications, semaphore, flag hoisted, flashing light), did lots of cross training. From 1948-1958, they were combined, were separated out again, then have been again combined since 2004. So, if you Grandpa served in the mid/late 1950s, he would need to learn both jobs.
