Wharfmaster Posted December 7, 2019 Share #1 Posted December 7, 2019 Found this fancy ropework group some time ago to a Bosn's Mate that served aboard USS Swan on 7 Dec. 1941. The USS Swan was a small Seaplane Tender for Patrol Wing Two at Pearl Harbor. Complement, 78 men. Cliff Joined the Navy in 1936, served aboard several Battleships and then joined Swan in 1940. His vessel was undergoing boiler Repair at the Marine Railway Dock Area when the first bombs began to fall. Not caught with their pants down, Swan's crew opened fire on the attacking aircraft 8 minutes later. They claimed one Japanese plane splashed from a direct hit with their 3 inch gun. Swan would remain in Pearl Harbor for a month for salvage duty. Cliff was transferred back to the states in 1943, only to return in 1944 aboard the brand new Destroyer USS Willard Keith, earning himself two more Battle Stars. Rest in peace Chief. The fringe handiwork reminds me strongly of that found on the motor launch 'Admirals barge'. Would almost wonder if it was a section cut from one, or he based it off the pattern.
