24th_infantry Posted December 5, 2019 Share #1 Posted December 5, 2019 I just picked this up from the great nephew of the 9th AAF veteran. I've never had a father/son group before, so I'm very happy to have saved these items to display for the public. Francis Joseph Doherty served in the USCG from June 1, 1918 to May 31, 1919 in the New York Division. Included in the group is his War Service Certificate and his American Legion uniform dated 1934 and named to Francis. The ribbons are American Legion service ribbon, the CT Veterans War Time Service, and WWI Victory. They are pin-back and wide gauge. His son was James Edward Doherty who served in the 9th AAF, 410th Bomb Group. He was awarded the Air Medal with 2 oak leaf clusters. James came home with PTSD and took his life in 1953 at age 30. He had no wife or children. He left a note for his mother but she never opened it, and it stayed sealed all these years. I found a newspaper article from 1919 or 1920 regarding Francis serving in the USCG. If anyone can locate any information on either of these men please let me know. I'm currently trying to bring James' uniform back to its prime. I'm looking for a nice vintage replacement ribbon rack. Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm posting pictures of the grouping plus the grave stones and the newspaper article.
