1/35 Scale Captured German VW Type 87

Recommended Posts

Brian posted these photos of a VW used by the US Army in the post war era.

Based on Brian's posted photos I out dug out this old kit of a German Army VW Type 87 Command Car that I had on the shelf for years. I chose to depict this car as being used by the US Army in the immediate post war era, summer 1945.

This model is set sometime after just after VE day when there was time for repainting vehicles and hunting for souvenirs and foraging. This Sergeant has a back seat full of souvenirs and other trading stock. It was a fun project

Here are some photos. Thanks for looking.

"I have only two men out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (Message sent by 1st Lt. Clifton B. Cates. USMC, 96th Co., Soissons, 19 July 1918 - later 19th Commandant of the Marine Corps 1948-1952)

Another Reference photo I found online. The vehicle in the front is not a VW877 but it's similar. The GIs used a lot of German vehicles at the end of the war.

I think that could be a Fiat Topolino, or the French-made version the Simca 5?

Money can't buy happiness -- but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Corvette than in a Yugo.
