1872-1903 Army Officer's Shoulder Knots

:rolleyes: Lieutenant General Philip H. Sheridan shown in a lithograph wearing 1872-1903 officer's shoulder knots, but, they were supposed to be worn only by Lieutenants, Captains, Majors, and Colonels - BUT? Who would tell one of the top Generals he could not have them made special and wear them instead of the gold epaullettes?
