Naval Group China | SACO

Naval Group China (NGC), was a U. S. Navy organization during World War II whose operations paralleled those of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Today Naval Group China is as obscure as the OSS is well known.

On 24 April 1944 Admiral Ernest J. King issued an order re-designating all members of the Navy in the Sino-American Cooperative Organization (SACO) as members of Naval Group China and its chief would be Commodore Milton E. Miles. It was the umbrella organization for units that performed weather forecasting, advised and trained Chinese guerillas, and intercepted and analyzed Japanese radio traffic. Most of the sailors belonging to SACO were Seabees but many came from the Navy’s Scouts and Raiders (predecessors of the Navy SEALs and Underwater Demolition Teams) because of their experience in covert operations.
