beerdragon54 Posted November 29, 2019 Share #1 Posted November 29, 2019 Just got this and was wondering what the heck it is. Strap is marked Mills as well. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
TrenchRat Posted November 29, 2019 Share #2 Posted November 29, 2019 Good day, I believe what you have is the Mills Army Haversack, catalogue number 240. If so, this features the rare canteen-haversack strap; similar to the 1909 suspenders. Probably why the strap is olive drab in color.
TrenchRat Posted November 30, 2019 Share #3 Posted November 30, 2019 Color may also, and more likely be, Pea Green...is the strap dated? I should mention the strap has its own catalogue entry...#214.
beerdragon54 Posted November 30, 2019 Author Share #4 Posted November 30, 2019 Thanks Trenchrat. I think I better add a book on Mills equipment to my Christmas list. Strap wasn’t dated. It is more of a pea green color. Sounds like my $40 wasn’t wasted. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Marchville1918 Posted November 30, 2019 Share #5 Posted November 30, 2019 It strongly resembles the small pack used with the British P08 equipment which I believe was manufactured by Mills. It lacks the buckles on the ends of the po8 pack and the straps on the back side and is clearly NOT a P08. I am inclined to agree with the suggestion above that it is a military pack offered by Mills not adopted by the American army but available for private purchase. TrenchRat Posted November 30, 2019 Share #6 Posted November 30, 2019 Baystate Militaria sells these reprint Mills catalogues for a meager $5.00. As you see, these come in handy...
beerdragon54 Posted December 1, 2019 Author Share #7 Posted December 1, 2019 I did find this on the sling buckle that I had missed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

US Victory Museum Posted December 14, 2019 Share #9 Posted December 14, 2019 Just to re-iterate what Glenn [USMF Trenchrat] had previously posted:This is a combination of two items found in Mills' catalogs. The bag is listed as the item №240: Mills Army Haversack; thestrap as item №214 Mills Canteen Haversack Strap. The fact that these haversacks are found in small numbers isan indication that these were never adopted for use by theQMD; however, their commercial strap was identical to the canteen-haversack strap, model of 1910 (for Philippine Scouts). It conforms to the drawing produced by Rock Island Arsenal(Mar. 12th, 1915)Although not adopted for regular army, these items were availablefor purchase by State Guards, and for personal purchase.
