kloonej Posted January 5, 2009 Share #1 Posted January 5, 2009 Hi, 1st ID from Poland sendin regards. We discuss about carrying haversacks in battle and can`t reach an agreement. How look this situation, did GI`s put down haversacks when go to battle, or they take havers with them? What was frequently applied? We know the situation was difrent everytime, for example Armored Divisions have a lot of vechicles, trucks, jeeps, tanks, wich can carry, bulky equipment, but ID`s have less of vechicles, sometimes have not. at last how about that, if unit go to the battle, from taken before position, where they can put equipment and take it after fight. Thanks, and sorry for poor language.
mjerickson Posted January 5, 2009 Share #2 Posted January 5, 2009 Greetings from the USA my group also does 1st Inf Div, spicificly 1st platoon E Co. 16th INf Reg. Since we are truely an infantry squad our theroy is this. We use the m-1928 pack for most of our impressions, it is not easy to drop without loosing your cartrage belt as well and the GI needed to carry essentials some how. We often see other Infantry reenactors with the M-1936 suspenders or either a musette bag or gas mask bag rather than the haversack. Even though the gas mask bag was commonly carried it seldom replaced the haversack. If we are doing a late 1944 to 1945 impression we often carry our items in a hobo roll. This was common and with the issue of the M-43 field jacket lots more pocket space. Hope this helps. Mike

Dirteater101 Posted January 12, 2009 Share #5 Posted January 12, 2009 One thing many soldiers learned rather quickly, you can not fight effectively with a pack on. Most of the vets we have talked too said they left their burden (pack) at the foxhole when going on a patrol. Would put it on when they had to move out.
