Late WW1 grenades went from the toggle type fuze to the " new" design short spoon MKII type. The body color changed from WW1 black, to post war grey, then to yellow then to OD. The MK1 body had fewer segments and no serrations on the neck portion. Due to the huge quantities made in WW1, the MK1 body was firstly fitted with the " latest" short spoon with cut back body. Fitted with the new fuzes, MK 1 bodies could be found painted grey ( up to the 1920's) or red ( early practice , plug removed) and a few in blue.

War Office pictures of WW1 grenades. Some claim the MK1 with new fuze style did not reach Europe before the war ended, but period dated manuals state huge quantities were shipped priority to US troops as the toggle type fuzes were a disaster.
