David Minton Posted November 22, 2019 Share #8 Posted November 22, 2019 Distinguishing Mark is a certification/qualification which proves mastery of skills beyond normal duties. In the first half of the 20th century, they were often precursors to new ratings. For example the first radio operators were Electrician's Mates, who wore the lightening distinguishing mark to show they were qualified as radio operators. Once there was a greater need for radio operators, the Navy created a sport ratings, and the Electrician's Mates became Radioman.
