Types of WW2 aircrew nav computers?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

apart from the standard MARK 3A US Navy plotting board and the E6B types, what computers were used by USN aircrew during WW2?

Was the MARK 8 ‘prayer wheel’ used during the war or was it post was issue?

I have the black AN5835-1 type marked US NAVY and a round MARK 8 (but it looks too modern), I almost purchased an older MARK 8 made from what looked like cardboard of some sort but wasn’t sure what era it was.

thanks in advance for your help,

cheers, John

From what I remember the Mark 8-a was also used in WW2 Mark 3a and 5a plotting board, It should have a contract. But this is a integrated part of the board. The separately Mark 8-a computer is useless I guess...

Here is a photo of Mark 8-a computer on Mark 3a plotting board: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_rel_module=post&attach_id=777991

Thanks,

I forgot that the MARK 8A was used on the plotting board.

I wonder what the earliest MARK 8 not mounted on the plotting board was.

Cheers, John

I checked my MK3a board and it got a Mark 8 computer attached. But saw a example with Mark 8-a also.

Im not if they used a separately Mark 8 or Mark 8a computer? Maybe in a multi-engines aircraft, for sure not in the single engine aircraft!

Cheers,

Jerry

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi,

I finally found the MARK 8 that I had seen on the net, seems to be made of card of some sort and quite old looking, the only MARK 8 I have seen not on a plotting board.....lots of later MARK 8A metal computers about, with and without the tabs around the edge.
