-this is a 1940 cachet from my pre WW2 and WW2 naval cancel collection. This particular one was sent from the USS Philadelphia CL 41 commemorating the 165th anniversary of the Marine Corps. Ship cancels and cachet collecting them was once a very big hobby in the USA They are probably one of the more affordable way for young and smaller budget collectors to own a piece of history although some ship cancels can get fairly expensive.

USS Philadelphia (CL-41) was a Brooklyn class cruiser that took part in the US occupation of Iceland, Operation Torch, the invasion of Sicily and the landings at Salerno, Anzio and in the south of France. Philadelphia received five battle stars for World War II operations.

Happy Birthday Marines. My dad was a Marine. When he died members of the Marine Corps League stood watch at his viewing. When he was buried three Marines presented my Mom the colors. It was a Saturday and I thanked them for giving up part of the day to do this. The Marines are a Class Act.
