Amazing, uncommon WW II Combat V, triple award of the Legion of Merit (they were a lot stingier than the US Army) and separate auction Bronze Star Combat V with paperwork. I don't know the seller, I'm just another watcher biding my time. RADM Francis E.M. Whiting.

"Great Collection.WWII Legion of Merit Medal, Lapel Pin, and Case along with 7 Commendation letters (3 stapled together). 2 are signed and one other may be stamped. All for Rear Admiral F.E.M. Whiting. Box has some edge damage, but hinge in VG condition. Small hole in bottom of case ( pencil tip size). The Department of Navy letters are from:

1. Bureau of Navy Personnel Vice Admiral Louis Denfield Jan. 9, 1947
2.Commander Battleship Division Seven O.C. Badger 7 February 1945
3.The Secretary of the Navy Washington James Forrestal Secretary of the Navy
4. United States Pacific Fleet Commander Marianas G.D. Murray Vice Admiral USN
5. Headquarters of the Commandant Third Naval District 17 October 1946 Monroe Kelly

I don't think it's that unusual my grandfather Vice Admiral Theodore D. Ruddock was awarded 2 navy Crosses and 5 Legion of Merits, along with other medals, Purple Heart etc

I'll defer to my friend, Adam R., whom I think most Navy medal collectors would consider an authority on the subject, who posted this in the pinned post on this board "Legion of Merit Showcase"

http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/67703-legion-of-merit-showcase/page-7

"A very rare TRIPLE Legion of Merit group to a USN recipient. Note that the LoM is a WWII Army type with longer ribbon, heavier enamel and gilt wrap brooch. Details on the awards are shown below.

Be that as it may, in addition to your grandfather, I am aware of one other USN Legion of Merit with 4 Gold Stars (5 awards). So perhaps a good time to list all the USN WW II recipients of 5 LOMs or more. So, we're at 2 for now.

A sentiment shared by many here- why the Hell separate items when they belong to the same veteran !!

"It's all about the Benjamins" is a sh*%y excuse.
