McDermut99 Posted October 25, 2019 Share #4 Posted October 25, 2019 Yikes. She has seen better days, and the heat stamp looks to be gone. Still a front seam is a great find, just needs a little cleaning!
manayunkman Posted October 25, 2019 Share #5 Posted October 25, 2019 Do you have better pictures of the strap attachments? Are they Airborne? Looks like the helmet has been taped to the liner? Is there a liner?
manayunkman Posted October 25, 2019 Share #6 Posted October 25, 2019 Don’t clean it.
The Rooster Posted October 25, 2019 Author Share #7 Posted October 25, 2019 Chin straps are airborne and you can see where the liner was tapped to the shell. Chin straps are rotted. One broke off when I was handling it. Yes the heat stamp is toast. But its def ww2. Repurped in the 60's? 70's? All the old paint was removed. Its just got the green paint with sand. No liner. The Rooster Posted October 27, 2019 Author Share #8 Posted October 27, 2019 I ended up cleaning it. It was shedding fabric and rust all over the place and in the interest of preserving it. …. Ive removed most of the rust. I need to hit it again and then stabilize the corrosion. I used Whink Rust remover and a nylon brush. It doesn't effect the paint , just removes the rust. I also replace the airborne chin straps with new old stock airborne chin straps from the same era as the old ones. I paired it with an old airborne liner I have. I think the way I cut down the rust was preferable to taking a wire brush to it. I t was just too much of a mess to leave as is.

The Rooster Posted October 28, 2019 Author Share #15 Posted October 28, 2019 Well.... its been over a week since I picked this up. Today I was fortunate to aquire the original liner that goes with this helmet. It was up for sale from the same seller I bought the helmet from. It came along with a stripped liner. The rust and the tape matches the helmet.

The Rooster Posted October 28, 2019 Author Share #17 Posted October 28, 2019 Personally, I am not understanding why sellers split up the shells and the liners? But anyhow I am glad I got this and maybe I shouldnt have cleaned the shell? I had no idea I was going to get the liner. In any case, I have the original pics and Ive kept the original straps from the shell. Although rotted, I have them. And I wont be cleaning the liner... Live and learn. Ray42 Posted October 29, 2019 Share #21 Posted October 29, 2019 Glad to see that liner ended up reconected with it's origional helmet. I was also bidding on it and had planned to go higher because it was a fairly nice airborne liner and I was really intrested in the other liner that was with it. Please let us know if you find out what is under the paint because it looks like there is a decal that was painted over. It looks like it was for the best that the auction ended when I was in class and couldnt get to the phone.
The Rooster Posted November 1, 2019 Author Share #22 Posted November 1, 2019 I got the liner in today. I put it back in the steel pot and put the straps that came with it back on. Im not sure why sellers split these things up ? Apparently, the seller or someone tried to unsnap the airborne snaps from the liner. They were stuck together through corrosion and pulled the entire snap assembly from the liner. The snaps are still stuck on the steel airborne chin straps. I put the buckle back onto whats left of the one side of the chin strap that is rotted.
