Mango Posted October 12, 2019 Share #1 Posted October 12, 2019 Still new in the M1 helmet game and I'd like to know whether or not this helmet that is for sale looks good or not. My first impression is that it looks fine and that it is a WWII shell with a Korean War liner and WWII sweat band. But why is the shell so smooth? It is priced at $120. Please let me know if I'm running into a trap here

Blacksmith Posted October 12, 2019 Share #5 Posted October 12, 2019 Hard to tell from the pics, but the shell doesnt look US to me - maybe Euro-clone? Chinstraps are definitely funky.
olivedrab1970 Posted October 12, 2019 Share #6 Posted October 12, 2019 I would say Belgian euro clone as well, I have one and it is identical to your pot. Austrian M1 helmets are identical but gray in color. These make great Reenactor helmets as they are cheap and no worries of damaging a collectible pot. R.D. Mango Posted October 12, 2019 Author Share #7 Posted October 12, 2019 Yea sorry about the pics but they were the ones available from the seller. Thank you guys for saving me the trouble of buying this helmet, much appreciated!
RememberThe5thESB Posted October 14, 2019 Share #8 Posted October 14, 2019 I'd say I'd agree with it looking funny, but I've NEVER seen a euroclone with a front seam. And I'm positive that is a true front seam. Perhaps it's a genuine USGI pot given to one of the NATO countries and refitted with their straps? Definitely not worth the price asked for in the first place though having been messed with so thoroughly. Straps look Danish in my opinion and as far as I know the Danish army used US made M1 helmets (among others) after WW2.
Theriddler Posted October 17, 2019 Share #10 Posted October 17, 2019 Hi guys Euro clones don’t have Heat Lot numbers so I would say that the shell Is of US manufacture as is the liner. I have read on this forum about chinstraps been replaced in the field and attached with rivets so there is the possibility the chinstraps are genuine. One of the things that also helps to identify a US made shell are the swivel bail brackets. Below is a picture of an American made shell swivel bracket, note how the bail overlap is underneath the bracket while the overlap on the Euro Clone bracket goes over the top of the bail. Get the seller to send you a picture of this area to confirm things. US swivel bail.

Would love to see the inside of it. Bales and chinstraps on both sides. If it has a 3-4-5 letter serial number stamped on the inside of the rim in the back, it’s a diaward steel works helmet (civil defense m/52). Unfortunately I don't own the helmet, it was a reference picture only. I have only one single Danish civil defense helmet but this one was produced in Austria by Witwe Ulbrichts (marked U.SCH.67 and with the crowned CF stamp). There is currently a similar Danish helmet offered on Ebay (as Army Nato Helmet) with the same kind of chinstraps and the 5 letter serial number you mention on the rim, but no MP signs (https://www.ebay.de/itm/Army-Nato-Stahlhelm-mit-Innenhelm/133443200703?hash=item1f11d5a6bf:g:WH4AAOSw4yte4xUu). twthmoses Posted June 20, 2020 Share #15 Posted June 20, 2020 Yep thats a danish civil Defense m/52 Shell, with a m/58 liner production post 1963. This is not the original liner for this shell. They are made by diaward steel works in Hong Kong. They are all magnetic. These shells tent to be sold cheap, simple because people do not know what it is. A common, faulty, belief is that they are of Danish make, produced by glud&marstrand. Not so! Only 60.000 of these was ever produced (plus another 50.000 for the army) in the grand total of m1 helmets and clones, it’s a small number. Still people just tries to get rite of them, and paint them over to look army for more bucks. I love them. You can still easy get them for 10 bucks or so on some Danish sites.
